A Week in Okinawa: Nature, Stars & Sea with a Guest from Europe

This January we had the pleasure of welcoming a solo traveller from Europe for an unforgettable week exploring the wilder, quieter side of Okinawa. Based at the beautiful Busena Terrace in Nago, our guest set out to experience the islands beyond the guidebooks, and what a week it turned out to be.

Into the Yanbaru: Mangroves & Mountains

The adventure began in the north, in the lush subtropical wilderness of the Yanbaru region. Our guest slipped into a kayak and glided through ancient mangrove forests along calm river channels, spotting wildlife tucked among the tangled roots, a peaceful, immersive start suitable even for first-time paddlers.

After a well-earned local lunch of Okinawan home cooking, think goya champuru and pork cutlet, served by a local restaurant owner, the afternoon called for something more energetic. Led by a certified local nature guide, our guest climbed to the summit of Mt. Nekumachidzi, the highest peak in Ogimi Village, deep inside the UNESCO-listed Yanbaru Forest. The reward at the top: sweeping views over untouched forest and turquoise sea.

Culture by Day, Jungle by Night

Another day balanced Okinawa’s rich heritage with its untamed side. We wandered the tranquil Fukushu-en Gardens, explored the historic grounds of Shuri Castle, and settled in for an early dinner at Cafe Yabusachi, where the ocean views are as memorable as the food.

Then, as darkness fell, the day took a thrilling turn. Our guest ventured into the Ugawa jungle for a guided night trek through southern Okinawa’s dramatic karst-forest landscape, part open-top jeep ride, part walk on foot, all under the sounds of nocturnal life. Massive limestone formations, hidden springs, and the quiet mystery of the forest after dark made for a truly extraordinary evening.

Out to Sea: Whales & Corals

No Okinawa winter is complete without whale watching. Our guest headed out early by boat into the waters where humpback whales gather each season, a chance to witness these magnificent animals in their element.

The love of the ocean continued with a scuba day in Sunabe, Chatan. Guided by English-speaking PADI instructors, our guest enjoyed a two-tank shore dive at one of Okinawa’s most beautiful sites,soft corals in every direction, calm conditions, and even a quirky underwater Japanese mailbox to photograph. The evening ended on a dreamy note, strolling through the South East Botanical Gardens Illuminations, one of Japan’s largest light displays.

Under the Stars

For a gentle, awe-inspiring finale, our guest travelled up to the dark skies of Kunigami Forest Park for a stargazing experience, reclining under a blanket of stars far from the city lights, taking in the quiet beauty of the northern night sky.

A Trip to Remember

From mangroves and mountains to whales, corals and stars, this was Okinawa at its most authentic and adventurous. It was a joy to share our islands with such a curious and open traveller — and we can’t wait to welcome the next.
